16TH MAY 2012 read more

Maurie Fabrikant, President of the Victorian Jazz Club Inc. passed away at 10am on Wednesday 16th May, having battled with Motor Neurone Disease for the past 18 months. Maurie was President for the past five years, and has worked tirelessly to restore the Club to the happy and lively place it now is.

He will be sadly missed in the Melbourne jazz music world, and in the ranks of members of the Victorian Jazz Club.

Our thoughts are with Doreen, Ruth, Susie and Simon and their children at this sad time.

A BRIEF RESUME OF RECENT EVENTS

Saturday 12th May saw nearly 200 people pack the Clayton RSL to hear that wonderfully professional and musically excellent band – The Cotton Club Orchestra. Swing dancers were there in force, and the dance floor was packed all evening. Plenty of toe-tapping by those who were seated onlookers also! This band never fails to entertain and provide top class music and dancing entertainment.

Sunday 13th May was a most remarkable day – a Fund Raiser for the Motor Neurone Disease Association, run as a tribute to President Maurie Fabrikant who has been afflicted with this disease, saw 250 people return to the Clayton RSL for an all-day feast of jazz, cameraderie, music jams, band performances, and general “catch-up” by musicians from all over – they came from as far away as Newcastle, Wollongong, Adelaide, Canberra, Tasmania, and lots of places in between to pay homage to a great musician, President and genuine “all Australian guy”.

The handsome result saw the incredible amount of $9500 raised by a very small group of very hard-working people, with lots of assistance and input from other Jazz Clubs, members of the VJC not on the Committee and friends. A day that had to be seen to be believed!
